1.5 million cancer
patients
in
China,
80%
require
radiation therapy
and/or
chemotherapy. Sensitizers
would act
on
the
resistant
hy-
poxic (relatively
independent
of
oxygen)
cells-
radiose-
nsitization and
chemosen-
sitization
for
radiation
and
chemotherapy
sensitization
respectively. lnitially,
misoni-
dazole (MISO) was too toxic
to the
nervous system;
met-
ronidazole required
large
doses and also had digestive
system adverse
effects.
Recently, nitroimidazoles are
cytotoxic to hypoxic cells,
in-
crease sensitivity
to
chemo-
therapeutic agents, and valu-
able for imaging
the
location
of
these
hypoxic cells.
Also,
SR
2508
is
less
toxic
than
MISO.
The Author also
de-
scribes a sensitizer
derived
from
traditional Chinese
herbs
"purple ganoderma"
contain-
ing a Gac-D triterpenic
acid;
this
has
already
undergone
trials
in
Shanghai:
sleep,
appetite, mindset,
urination
and bowel
opening
improved
in
90% of
4,500 patients; 85%
had
better pain
and fever
control;
poor
liverfunction
and
low
white cell counts recover-
ed;35%
had much
longersur-
vivals
without
any
other
treatment.
