CANCER
PREVENTION
BEGINSWITH
KNOWLEDGE
Tumors
may
be
benign
or
malignant, depending
on
their degree
of
differentiation into
the
mature
and
specific cell types, growth rate
and
pattern,
spread
to other parts of
the
body.
A
firm
diagnosis is usually made
by
microscopic examination
of
samples
of the
tumor,
e.9., biopsy. At
times, even
benign lesions
may be
transformed into
malignant ones, e.9., benign polyps of
the colon left for years on end
may
finally become colon
cancer. To avoid
such changes,
these
polyps should be
removed surgically.
Apotosis is
an
interesting phenomenon
of
programmed
cell death;
it may
well
be
very
useful
for
killing cancer cells when manipulated
appropriately.
Cancers are caused
by
radiation
(including
sunlight), chemicals,
e.9., nitrosamine in salted fish, tar of
cigarettes;
viruses,
e.9., hepatitis
B
virus
of
liver cancer,
papilloma virus
of
cancer
of
neck of the womb (uterine cervix);
other cancer-causing agents are, e.9.,
H pylori bacteria of
stomach
ulcer and
cancer. Cancer requires many years
of development especially when immu-
nity
is weak.
The tendency
for
cancer
development may
be inherited,
e.9.,
nasopharyngeal,
colon and
breast
cancers. Those
with family
history
should
take
regular check ups. Refrain
lrom
active or passive smoking; take a
balanced
diet
and adequate fibers;
avoid
moldy
peanuts, burnt
meat or
lish;
maintain optimal mental
health and
take
regular exercises;
take
immuno-stimu-
latory food
or
health food.
