STUDYTHETONGUE AND
KNOWTHYSELF
The tongue tells
us a lot
about our
body,
especially the digestive
system.
The tongue's papillae are sensitive to
oxygen deficit; from
thence
on,
a
lot
of
information about
the
body
can
be
deduced. The tongue would also reflect
promptly any dehydration of the body
-
even
doctors detect dehydration from
the tongue.
A
swollen tongue may indi-
cate thyroid insufficiency;
a
weak
tongue, nerve or brain disease atfect-
ing
the nerve supply
of
tongue muscles;
a fissured tongue, poor nutrition;
a
tremulous tongue, thyroid
hormone
over-secretion
or
chronic alcoholic
intoxication;
a
flat and
smooth tongue,
pernicious anemia
(due
to
lack of
vita-
min
812)
or achlordydria (insufficient
stomach acid);
maplike
tongue, lack of
ribollavin
(vitamin
82); a
"strawberry
tongue",
in
scarlet
fever,
severe
pneumonia; a white
tongue, thrush
in-
fection
(by
a fungus called "candida",
usually
in
immunity
compromised
subjects);
a
yellow
tongue, jaundice due
to
liver
disease
or
biliary
outflow
obstruction. "Leukoplakia"
is a
discrete
white
patch
and
is
a
pre-cancerous con-
dition
-
consult your
doctor
as soon as
feasible.
We all
have
experienced the
very
small
but most painful "aphthus
ulcers"
of the
tongue
-
they usually heal
within
a
week or so, if not, consult
your
doctor. For any
prolonged
ulcer on the
tongue,
medical
opinion
is imperative.
Very frequent aphthus ulcer develop-
ment
may
also mean a compromised
immunity.
