CHINESE MEDICINE
FOR
TREATING SARS
.
VIABILITY
CONSIDERATIONS
SARS is hitting Hong
Kong
so
hard that,
just
a
few
more
"Amoy
Gardens" and
we
may perish.
The
picture
is
gloomy but China's integra-
tion
of
Western and traditional Chinese
medicine (TCM) seems very attractive.
Apart from steroids, anti-virals
and
antibiotics,
1/5
of
patients
require
respirators
located
in
intensive care
units (lCUs)
-
for
such acute medical
care, Western medicine
is
essential,
yet,
TCM has a great potential as
a
supplement. With the full complement
of
Western
medical
facilities
including
operating
rooms, lCUs
and
isolation
wards, TCM hospitals in China differ
considerably from those of Hong Kong.
ln
contrast, Hong Kong hospitals
lack
mechanisms
for
integration,
even
though
the
basic understanding that
TCM should not be used without the
consent
of
the patient and the
doctor
in-charge
is
there. Prof Leung, whilst
affirming the efficacy
of
Hong
Kong
medics,
firmly
believes in the
fine
TCM
concept
of
treating
"sub-clinical"
diseases
to be most
attractive
for
known
SARS high-risk groups, e.9., medical
& nursing
staff,
family and other close
contacts,
etc.
Based
on
well-known
potions
in
use
for over
a thousand
years,
a
typical TCM formula has been
prepared
by
him with
the
convenience
of
Western medication
to
cater for
prompt
consumption
at
the
mass level
in
the
context
of
SARS.
ln addition,
TCM
physicians well versed
with
integration
with Western medicine should
be
invited here.
