Cunently, genetic engineering
lor
food, drugs
or
biological warfare, stem
cell copies and
even
copies of
human
beings are hot bio-technology topics.
At present, there are
20 countries
experimenting on
copying of
human
beings.
However,
all such copying work
have
very
high risks
-
initially, copies
result in
abortion
because
of
certain
genetic
or
other abnormalities;
even
the
life of
the mother bearing the copy may
also be at risk. Despite the acceptance
of
the high risks
for
animals, the
risks
are unacceptable lor human beings and
the
technique
is immature for humans.
However,
as copying of human
being
has
very
attractive
financial
gains, it is
very
appropriate
that the
law should
prohibit the copying of human
beings.
On the other hand, stem cell copying is
supported
by
health authorities
as
stem
cell copies of heart muscle, brain,
liver,
kidney,
etc.,
may be
valuable sources
for
transplants
as
these
have exactly
the
same genetic typing as
the
recipient
and
rejection of foreign
tissues
having
different genetic typing would
not occur.
Even
stem cell-derived tissues or
cell
collections can be "transplanted"
to
patients with, e.9., Parkinson's disease
or diabetes, etc, the potential
of stem
cell reproduction
is
great. Nevertheless,
certain major ethical issues still remain
to
be solved.
