63 old man, suffering

matoid arthritis, regularly gave part ol
his
medication (containing aminopyrine)
to his

-year old grandson hoping to
"Prevent"
the
disease.
Aplastic
anaemia finally
resulted.
Normally,
with
bone marrow regeneration,
red blood
cells are regularly
replaced.
Unfortu-
nately, aminopyrine has
a
side-efiect
of
suppressing the bone marrow
in a
very
small proportion of patients, especially
when taken
for
a
long
time.
ln normal
practice, such patients' blood cells are
checked
regularly.
ln fact, a number of
medications
have
serious side
etfects
like
gut initation, toxicity to the liver and
kidneys
etc,
not
to
mention
the
possibility of sensitivity
reactions.
Direct medical supervision
on
their use
is
paramount, especially
lor
those
medications
lhat
have to
be
taken long
term.
