The King
of
Jordan died of malig-
nant lymphoma on February
7,
1999.
Malignant
lymphomas
are
ot
2
types
-
"Hodgkin's" and
"Non-Hodgkin's
Lymphoma (NHL)". Low-grade
NHL
is
relatively
benign,
develops
slowly and
treatment
is not indicated unless
there
are
symptoms.
Such policies of active
observation are compatible with
long
survivals and normal living
is
not
aflected.
On
the other hand,
both
intermediate and high-grade NHL
are
amenable
to treatment, mainly
by
chemotherapy and radiation therapy,
with
reasonable results
for
the early
stages.
The causation
of
malignant lym-
phomas
is
largely
unknown
but
is
closely
related
to the
body
immune
system, ionizing radiation (e.9., atomic
bomb explosions) and abnormalities
ol
the
P53 gene. Whenever there
are
enlargement
of
lymph glands
in the
body
for
more
than 2 weeks, medical
attention must
be
sought.
More
advanced
cases
of
malignant
lymphoma may
also
have tiredness,
unexplained
fever, night
sweats,
significant weight loss and itchiness.
Definitive diagnosis
is
usually made by
biopsy
of
the lesion. With the
anticipated
progress
on the
causation,
treatmenl eflicacy would
improve
further. At present, it
is
vital to detect
the
disease at the earliest stage.
