angiostatin
was
discov-
ered.
lt
is
secreted by
the
primary
cancer and can suppress the formation
of new blood vessels in cancer depos-
its
located
in
the
rest of the
body.
ln
animal studies,
by
restraining
the
growth of
blood
vessels supplying
the
cancer
cells,
angiostatin may
even
suppress
the
growth
of
cancer
deposits. Soon, another scientist
discovered in another animal
model
similar substances
that
have
rather
different
mechanisms. Thus, these
factors can
profitably be
combined
together with angiostatin
for
the
eradication of cancers without any of
the
existing side
eflects of
chemo-
therapy.
Unlike
chemotherapy, resistant
strains of cancer
cells are
not induced
-
a great advantage.
Paradoxically,
when the primary cancer is
removed,
established secondary deposits
in
other
parts
6f
the
body
would
grow faster
than
before
-
e.9.,
the manilestation
of
these
secondaries soon after cancer surgery
is
attributed
to
this
rather
than
poor
skills
of
the surgeon. Although the implemen-
tation of the application of such factors
on
humans would require
up
to
10
years,
this
really represents
a
major
breakthrough.
