Gas intoxication
is
actually
poisoning by carbon
monoxide
-
a common
accident.
The death
rate
is
highest amongst
all
kinds
of
accidents. Whenever there is
burning
without
an
adequate
supply
of
oxygen,
carbon
monoxide
forms,
e.9.,
in
winter, the use of a burner
for
warm-
ing in an air-tight room.
Hyperbaric
oxygen therapy(treatment
using
oxygen
administered
at
higher
than
atmospheric pressures)
is
effective
in
the
management
of
carbon
monoxide poisoning and can prevent
neurological and psychiatric complica-
tions. According to
the
Naval
Adminis-
tration
Hospital in China, the treatment
of
1259 cases
ol
mild,
moderate
and
severe carbon
monoxide
poisoning by
a
comprehensive
programme
using
mainly hyperbaric
oxygen therapy,
the cure
rate was
as
high
as
98.2"/"i
the
overall etfective
rate,
99.1%;
the
death rate,
0.86%.
With
this
kind
of
results,
hyperbaric
oxygen
is
also
used to
treat
poisoning
due to other less common gases.
