SYNDROME
IN
OLD
PEOPLE
Osteoporosis syndrome
is
a
group of bone diseases from various
causes.
The characteristic
is
the
loss
of
bone
tissue
but
there
is
normal
calcification. The condition
is
common-
est in
male over 55
years or
in meno-
pausal women.
ln
females, the condi-
tion
occurs
earlier and is more
common.
As
much
as
15%
of old
people
have
osteoporosis.
As there
may
be
no
symptoms,
it is
otten discovered
upon
accidental
falls that are
common
amongst old
people.
lf
possible, old
people should get
to
know more about
this
condition.
ln
females,
as
osteoporo-
sis
is mostly related to
the
reduction
of
female hormone after
menopause,
replacement hormone therapy would
help
to
reverse
it.
Clinically,
symptoms
are bone ache,
muscle weakness
or swelling;
if
there
is collapse of the
spine,
the
patient may become
shorter
in
stature. Deformity
of
the chest
may
affect heart and
lung functions. Treat-
ment
depends
on
the
cause.
Apart from
taking
medications prescribed,
the
individual should
strive to take
a
balanced
diet
and engage in regular
but non-strenuous exercises.
