AWALKTHROUGH
MODERN
GENETECHNOLOGY
Cells
in
the body have a nucleus,
inside which are nucleic
acids
made
from phosphoric acid, sugars and base
pairs -
RNA
or DNA (ribo-
or
deoxyribo-
nucleic acids). According
to
different
arrangements
of the
components,
different proteins are synthesized. The
various segments
of
these are
known
as
"genes". Many diseases,
e.9.,
diabetes, psychiatric, cancer, rheuma-
tism and degenerative vascular ones
required continual treatment
as
there
is
no cure.
The
normal
function of
proto-
oncogenes
in
the body may
be
altered,
e.9., upon smoking
or
specific
viral
infection, excessive radiation,
sunlight
etc.
they become oncogenes
-
the ear-
liest stage
in
cancer formation.
Gene
therapy,
the administration of
a
specific
anti-oncogene,
represent the
future ol
cancer treatment. Even before family
planning, the occurrence
of
many
familial diseases can also be predicted
by
genetic studies. ln USA, plans
are
implemented for mapping the genes of
the
human body so that treatment of
diseases would
be as
convenient
as
an
engineer checking on circuit
break-
downs. China must catch up in such
vital
research.
