RISK FACTORS
OF
CEREBRAL
ATHEROSCLEROSIS AND
THE
PREVENTIVE PROCEDURES
Atherosclerosis
in
the
arteries
of
the
brain
is
similar to that elsewhere
in
tha
body.
The atheromatous
plaques
tend to form at branchings and curves.
Thrombosis
is
most
likely to occur
when
the
plaque
clags
up
the
lumen.
Hypertension
and
aggravate
the
athero-
sclerotic
process.
Other
factors
like
hyperlipidemia, cigarette smoking, ab-
normal glucose
tolerance,
obesity and
psychological factors (emotional stress
and
anxiety)
etc.
Untortunately,
no
con-
vincing evidence has been obtained
in
man
that atherosclerotic
lesions either
in
the
brain or
other
site of
the body can
be made to
regress.
There
is
some en-
couraging evidence
in
animals that
rela-
tively uncomplicated plaques
induced
by hyperlipidemia will regress, and
that
further progression
ol
atherosclerosis
will cease when hyperlipidemia is
re-
moved.
Perhaps, prevention, rather
than treatment,
is
thus the
goal
and one
of
the most imponant tasks
facing
those
responsible for the health of the public.
Conservative measures which may are
discussed
in
the
present paper help
to
reduce
that
risk.
