Getting to Know Herpes Zoster
Herpes zoster that commonly occurs at the waist, is caused by the chicken pox virus (varicella zoster virus). After getting chicken pox,
the virus remains dormant at the dorsal root ganglion of our spinal cord till our immunity is somehow compromised: reactivation
occurs, forming herpes zoster with nerve pain as a characteristic: even post-herpetic pain may occur well after healing of the herpes
zoster. Herpes zoster may occur in any part of the body, rarely, it may even cause viral encephalitis upon the involvement of the brain;
also viral meningitis when the brain meninges are involved; viral enteritis when the gut is involved; viral cystitis when the bladder is
involved. Early on, there is paresthesia, then, at the distribution zone of the nerve, there is redness, painful vesicle formation. Although
healing occurs in 2-3 weeks, complications are: superimposed bacterial infection: if involving the eye, blindness may ensue; if the
facial nerve is involved, facial palsy may ensue; finally, post-herpetic pain (despite healing) may occur. Treatment is by strong pain
killers, anti-viral agents +/- steroids. Early diagnosis begets early healing. Better immunity (balanced diet, adequate sleep and regular
exercises) may prevent it.
