Be Not Afraid of Gout
Gout due to high blood uric acid, is a disease of abnormal purine metabolism: there is accumulation of uric acid in the blood and urate
crystals are then deposited in joints (causing tophi: usually occur in the big toes or thumbs) or in soft tissues, inducing an attack of
strong tissue reaction, with tenderness, redness, swelling and warmth, etc. With excessive dietary protein or high purine food, the
blood uric acid level rises progressively. 2/3 of uric acid accumulated in the blood are excreted by the kidneys; 1/3, by the gut and
passed out with the stool. With time, the affected joint would be eroded progressively by the urate crystals and permanent damage may
ensue. Affected patients are often middle age males, especially the obese, diabetics, hypertensive or those with chronic heart diseases.
Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) give prompt symptomatic relief. Gout patients should refrain from drinking and
taking high-purine food; must also take medications to lower the high blood uric acid levels, otherwise, attacks become more frequent
and affected joints progressively degenerate. Be careful!
