Serious Consequences of Indiscriminate Use of Antibiotics
Sir Alexander Fleming, a Nobel Prize laureate in 1945 for the discovery of the first antibiotic penicillin was very effective for bacterial
infections. Subsequently, numerous antibiotics have been in clinical use (both bactericidal (kills bacteria) or bacteriostatic (controls
bacterial activity) ones: both are valuable for human infections. However, many pitfalls still exist and bacterial resistance is currently
the greatest problem. Although antibiotics kill bacteria, bacterial resistance may well develop eventually; to minimize this, note well that
antibiotics are: (1) Ineffective for viral infections: should not be used (2) Ineffective for “rheumatism” or other similar pains for which
“anti-inflammatory” agents are indicated (3) Not an “over the counter” drug item: it must be dispensed with a doctor’s prescription (4)
Not meant to be a drug that can be requested: the is very unlike pain killers (5) To be taken according to the specified time and dose
(6) To be taken for the whole course despite symptom relief (7) To be taken either before or after meals as instructed (8) Liable to have
interaction with other concurrent drugs: tell your doctor your current drug list (9) Soluble in an adequate amount of water: take enough
water (10) Liable to have allergic reactions: if in doubt, ask your doctor!
