How Reliable Are Hearsays on the Internet?
On the Internet, many hearsays spread crazily: mushrooms are poisonous! It is true that in one Chongqing investigation, all samples of
straw mushrooms had excessive mercury; 1/3, excessive lead; 14% of coprinus had excessive mercury; 4% of shitake mushrooms had
excessive lead; 29% of Brazil mushrooms had excessive mercury and lead; even golden mushroom from Qinghai-Tibet Plateau also
had excessive cadmium and mercury; lingzhi mushrooms have similar issues. Yet, heavy metals are derived from the soil mushrooms
grow; but cultivated ones using straw (instead of soil) would have less heavy metal content. Mushrooms have a mechanism of heavy
metal complexing proteins to form the non-poisonous complex bodies to “isolate” heavy metals. Another issue: various permitted
food additives cause harm. Melamine (added illegally to diluted milk) is not a permitted food additive; rather, it is an industrial
chemical. Plasticizing agents in white wine: the quantity is very minute and does no harm. Similarly, news on fake mutton are grossly
exaggerated. Lastly, people often over-react when news on bird flu are being exaggerated.
