What’s the Revelation of the New Zealand Milk Powder Crisis?
New Zealand has the world’s largest export of dairy products: 60% of all productions. But, on 3 Aug, the Fonterra Cooperative Group
found their whey protein concentrates from a plant in Waikato, North Island, being tainted (from an incorrectly sterilized pipe) by
Clostridium Botulinum bacteria causing botulism: nausea, vomiting, eye and swallowing muscle problems: potentially fatal. Whey
proteins are added to many products, e.g., infant formulae, milk powders and sports drinks. In Sep 2012, 5% of their farms used
DCD (dicyandiamide) in their pastures to prevent nitrate (a fertilizer byproduct) from getting into rivers. Although the low DCD levels
were deemed not harmful to health, at higher doses, DCD irritates mucus membranes of the eyes and the skin. No mutually-agreed
international standards exist; our State Administration of Quality has only expressed concern on the issue but no authoritative statement
on the controversial safety issues is made. As the acclaimed imported milk powder brand names still have quality control problems, for
babies, mothers’ milk is safest!
