Why Cordyceps is Banned in Food Items
The Wuliangye Group denied manufacturing an illegal liquor “Cordyceps sinensis Wuliangye”: it was just a subsidiary product with
marketing confusion between the genuine (and more effective) cordyceps sinenses cultivated in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the
so-called “northern cordyceps” (cordyceps militaris) cultivated in Jilin, Hebei or Shaanxi Provinces, etc. Several other similar cases
with false medicinal claims referring to cordyceps sinensis surfaced, all without State Quality Supervision (no QS mark). As health
foods have only a tonic effect and are good supplements to treatment modalities, they should never be hailed as having therapeutic
values: mentioning any therapeutic values is thus strictly prohibited. However, many advertisements do stress their products (containing
cordyceps sinensis) as magic potions that are guaranteed to work promptly! As from 2002, the State Ministry of Health prohibited
Cordyceps sinensis, a valuable herbal medicinal item, to be added to ordinary food. As currently, there are no data on the safety of
cordyceps sinensis for long-term consumption, never take it as a health food for indefinite periods.
