The
incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer
is
high
in
southern
China,
especiatty
in
Guangdong, Guangxi
and
Hongkong.
Because
this
tumor
is
located
in
rather obscure region
and
its
clinical
sYmptorns
are
varied,
it
is often unrecognized
by
patients
and
rnakes
a delay or
missed diagnosis.
In some
reports,
the
misdiagnosis
rate
even
as
high
as 85%.
The
early
symptom
of
nasopharyngeal cancer
is
often
inapparent'
Bloody
nasal
secretion,
unilateral
tinnitus
or
lovvering
of
hearing,
occlusive
sensation
of
ear, and cervical
lVmph node
enlargement are
the warning
signs
of this
disease.
If
the
patient
complaints
these
symptorrc,
especially
with
family
history and
from
the
endemic area,
must
have
a medical
check-up
bV
E.N.T.
specialist.
The
prognosis
of
early
nasopharyngeal cancer
is
relatively
good.
According
to
the
1991 Asian-Pacific
Cancer Meeting,
the
five
years
survival rate
is
86.2%
by
using
combination
of
external and intra-nasal radiotherapy'
So
the
early
recognition
and
effective treatment must
be
emphasized.
