CHEMOPREVENTIVE
EFFECT ON
CANCER
There are claims that
certain
nutrients
containing
in
the food
may
have
a
special preventive
ortherapeutic
effect on
cancer development, either on
its initiation or subsequent
growth.
As
a
usual beverage, either black or green
tea,
has
been
known
to
have
a
lhis anti-
cancer
effect.
lt has
been shown that a
number of chemicals
containing
in
tea
extract such as polyphenol etc.
are
responsible
for
this
effect.
Researches
have demonstrated that polyphenol can
act as a chemopreventive of induced
cancer
in
animal
systems.
ln
experimental animals,
polyphenol can
inhibit mutations
of
normal
cells
through
an
effect
of
enhancing
the
repair
process of
damaged
DNA in
the
cells.
ln addition, a
number
of
antioxidant
nutrients such
as
vitamin C, b-carotene
and selenium etc. containing in tea
leaves
are probablythe other protective
components against
lrom
cancer.
Although such
effect are a long
distance
away from the claim that tea drinking
will
affect spontaneous human cancers,
tea-drinking
is
recommended
as
a
cheap beverage with certain
health
promotion effects.
