The 2016 Edition of “Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents”: What’s New?
The 2016 Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents has been released in May by our National Health and Family Planning Commission:
a high quality daily diet recommendation; plays an important functional role in promoting our healthy growth and preventing various
chronic degenerative diseases, e.g., cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity; adherence to a high quality diet has now
been associated with a lower risk of mortality. To help promote our healthy lifestyle and physical strength, this substantially revised
version of the Dietary Guidelines, together with the “Chinese Food Pagoda”, is a practicable guidance for dietary intake among our
population. The evidence from all respective cohort studies involved in producing these guidelines has already shown a substantially
reduced risk of many chronic diseases and mortality, provided that the guidelines are followed meticulously. All scientific findings give
supportive evidence; the general population is strongly encouraged to consume a broad variety of food on the basis of nutrient and
food intakes in order to prevent deficiency diseases; to avoid a surplus of energy and nutrients, our intake should be commensurate
with daily physical activity for best health promotion.
