Oranges Best Taken in Autumn for Cancer Prevention
The Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Australia documented 48 studies showing a diet high in
citrus fruits provides significant protection against mouth, larynx, pharynx and stomach cancers; and 19% reduction of stroke risks by
consuming one extra serving of citrus fruits a day. Oranges have >170 beneficial phytonutrients, yet, most of these are found in the peel
and inner white pulp (hence the wisdom of TCM herbs employing dried citrus peel). Limonoids have been shown to help fight breast
cancer. A Japanese study showed that auraptene found in the peel of citrus fruits may suppress liver, esophagus and colon cancers;
orange glycosides also enhances the turgidity of capillaries: may reduce blood pressure and dilate coronary vessels: may prevent
coronaries. The reddish color of citrus fruits is not from carotene but flavonoids: the most important of which has hesperetin, that,
together with limonoids suppress breast cancer cells but the latter is 45 times more potent. As oranges would curd the protein in milk,
avoid taking them together as absorption is affected. Although oranges are in season in autumn, excess causes a yellowish tinge of the
skin!
