Thyroid Gland Dysfunction Made Simple
The thyroid in front of the lower neck secretes thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) hormones. Hyperthyroidism common in
females 20-50, is thyroid hormone excess: rapid heart beats, tiredness, hand tremors, diarrhea, muscle weakness, weight loss, eyeball
protrusion, etc.; ultimately, irregular heart beats and heart failure (shortness of breath and ankle swelling). Treatment of choice is anti-
thyroid drugs for 1-2 years but allergic reactions or liver damage may occur. Surgery is for prompt relief of compression symptoms.
Oral ingestion of radioactive iodine is simple, inexpensive, effective and without short-term side effects but not for pregnant women and
those with eyeball protrusions. Hypothyroidism is thyroid hormone deficiency: slow body functions, poor memory, excessive weight
gain, depression, cold intolerance, husky voice, facial swelling, excessive hair loss, reduced sweating, menstrual disturbance, etc.,
due to an auto-immune disorder or over treatment of hyperthyroidism; but hereditary factors would cause retarded mental development
and dwarfism. Treatment is daily T4 tablets. Be happy, contented and optimistic; avoid agitation, anger, worries, anxiety, tension and
pressure!
